Hello, I'm one of the Old members from Classic times, if people are wondering. I've also been keeping an eye on things to see what the community is up to, I've never been one to make large grandiose post's or be super social, but I know a problem when I see one. From the years I've been involved with minecraft communities I've seen the same thing happen all over, the biggest problem is Boredom. Plain and simple. A game like minecraft is understandably enjoyable and fun for a very long time, however, it is also susceptible to staleness. It needs people to fuel plans, and motives. It needs human effort to make it more then what it is at its core. Thats where mods and gamemodes come into play, it takes some of the human imagination out of the equation so that people can focus on other easier to obtain goals. Here's a couple examples of what I'm talking about. Vanilla Vanilla SMP: strictly pve half-assed pvp arena's no rewards. automation is laggy, therefore no large machines laggy machines from production get items removed from the market. only thing left to do, is farm for resources and build random stuff.
Vanilla Creative: Building Critique No recognition besides a rank, and reputation in the community. MINIGAME MINIGAME SMP: everything of the Vanilla +some possible rewards for winning, IE shop credit Bounties for random pvp at any moment (Requires signup) Better shops/server activities. Longer time on the server before boredom sets in.
MINIGAME Creative: Build challenges Timed building events And large worlds for creations of every kind. (Possible tools like WorldEdit, and Voxel) for higher ranking builders. Modded smp/creative Still able to add everything from the previous groups. More indepth machines that reward hard work. Self created minigames/goals to create new machines. New dungeons/dementions to explore New items armor and Mobs Multiple paths to achieve the same thing Contests and Goals to create more power/production lines. More shop items Better storage options. And most of all More bragging rights. Multiple platforms and custom options for private packs (Create your own unique packet of mods for your own community "FTB")
I hope that this helps a little with the discussion, but even modded servers inevitable see a decrease in popularity as a packet begins to be completed across the board. End game is End game, everything comes to an end eventually. But a strong community like this one can last far longer then any game. And ultimately its the people that make a community grow. Shiny things can bring a mouse in, but its the food that keeps it there.

IGN:Morgosin Rank: Gold 4 Main Role(s): Top i'd love, I can also adc rather well. Favorite/Main Champ(s): Favorite champ, I'd say is Kalista now, she has a lot of potential. But my absolute favorite champ for my main, would be Malphite/shen/ or darius.

Alright so, Since we have all had such a great discussion of what needs to happen to help out the server. Lets make some suggestions. Post a short summary of the idea you have, and post a link to the page where it is found. Remember some ideas will require a build to go with it, examples being: Paintball, Blockhunt, Hunger games, Spleef, and many others. Remember this when you post, and be prepared to aid in any way you can. Block Hunt- If you have played Garry's Mod, or Teamfortress 2, you have most likely come across a mod called Prop Hunt. The goal of the mini game is to be the last prop standing. A player will either be a hunter or a prop, almost like a more in-depth form of hide and seek it has a time limit, and can take place in many custom arena's. http://www.curse.com/bukkit-plugins/minecraft/blockhunt

We need something new to happen, not just the same old stuff. I'm getting bored stiff with things being the way they are. We need CHANGE!
Agreed, Something has to happen. And someone either isn't caring enough about it. Or is to stuborn to do anything. I know there are limitation, but just leaving the elephant in the room, isn't clearing up any floor space.
Start listening to suggestions. try them out. at this rate its going to die. Mojang is to busy with their 2 new games to care about mine craft as much. So we have to make it what we can. Vanilla sucks okay. its dull boring. and way to easy. the most you can do is build something cool. But what happened to hours working towards a goal, a stat to say hey I have more (...) then you do! what happened to redstone innovations. what happened to creating new ways to do things. With the currant way the server is. its grinding iron/ gold selling it. and building things that no one will ever see/Building cities that will never be occupied. People can "Live" in as many cities as they want, but its not truly living there.
I know Optical doesn't like other people's plugins. but maybe, just maybe. He can put his pride aside and do what's best for the community.
Maybe take a took at mod packs, take a look at interesting mods. take a look at adventure maps, and creative server idea's. Opti was build on classic, the precursor to creative. Yet the server that sprouted from it. Is anything but easy to build what you want.
No one WANTS to grind for hours on end to maybe have enough wool to finish their project. No one WANTS to grind for hours to have a shit ton of money that you can't do anything with. NO ON WANTS!!! A plain smp server anymore, its god damn boring as hell and if you can't see it. Then there is a serious problem that needs addressing.
There I said it. I'm not afraid to either, this goes for Nick as well. all of the suggestions that I have seen recently have been instantly shot down. DO SOMETHING!!!!
Thanks for calling me out on this, now ill go and magically add plugins and stuff to the server using the console access that i don't have.
I know you don't have console access, but you do have influence on what does happen. Your one of 2 admins the people that run the server for Optical. You have more power then some trusted or member saying they want something. I know you spent hours on spawns and getting the server ready for players. I'm simply saying something has to be done. if it takes some poking and prodding then so be it. But if nothing is done, then all of that hard work. isn't going to matter is it??? What happened to the Nick I knew, the one that pressured optical for an SMP server, the one that was adamant about the player base. The Nick that was there before SMP was even a thing. You've changed Nick... I miss the Nick that pushed to make Opticraft special, not just show up once in a while not say a word, then logg off. I realize that school is taking up a massive chunk of your life. I understand that, it happens. Please don't take it as ridicule and hate, I don't mean that. and its hard to put it into words without it sounding harsh.

I've played it.. its like a extremely basic Dayz Epoch, I didn't enjoy it. but others do. yes you can build houses, yes you can "Survive" but its a shoot on sight game, with the very good chance of you dieing when you log off.

4. You're whining about how we're going to get whiners? ...Right
This is something that will happen. It has already happened when the areana's were added. Shit goes down. people get pissed, people leave. Its something that is always looked over, as not being important. EVERY SINGLE FACTION SERVER I have been part of, has gone under in under 3 months. they cause nothing but raging and hurt. Sure maybe if people were reasonable and didn't expect to keep everything all the time it would be better. But Someone always goes to far, camps someones base, nukes it, steals everything, trolls the other person. Pritty soon its a shitstorm of hate. Remember minecraft is played by a vast number of younger audiences, that don't take well to their stuff being destroyed or taken. And the server simply does not have the population to spare a few leaving. If anything it should be started and advertised but not made public to the server until after a month or so, when the factions have their own healthy population. Factions is a terrible idea unless we can pull off something completely different. which would require custom plugins and management.
