SMP Name changes
« on: February 06, 2015, 12:34:48 am »
Edit: It is now safe to change your names

Hi guys,

Please do not change your name, as you will lose your money & protection access and possibly other things.
SMP will have several of its outdated plugins upgraded shortly (24-48 hours), after which name changes will be supported.

Until then please stick with your name. We will try and restore balances, protections, etc for those that have already changed their names.

I will post a follow up topic once this has been resolved.

Really sorry!

So I've lost everything
Your new username is simply a new piece of info written to each plugin that needs to store it, and your old username is kinda just drifting around in those plugins without an "owner" if you will. Your old username is still there, so is all the info linked to it (LWC stuff, money, protection stones, permissions, rank, etc), but it will just take a bit of manual work to transfer that stuff back to you and whoever else is in the same situation as you.

With the updates Optical is working on, it will ensure that once you change your username, all your info will be "universally" linked to you through a UUID, so things like this don't happen again.

Deekay is correct, your information should be recoverable - although some might need to be done by hand unfortunately - we'll see.

Updates did not got as planned - some of the plugins have awful migration to UUID and would take several days to migrate. I am writing scripts to manually do this myself, and will then go ahead and update again. Timeframe is the same - 24-48 hours. Sorry

Optical, you're over 4 months behind with Top Voters.

I sent you a mail with this info but no reaction. Maybe you read it here.
Remember, votes are very important!

And thank you for all the other work you put into the server like solving this problem with the name changes.

Top voters will be addressed soon.

As an update - all plugins have been updated, and the server is now running on 1.8. However it is still not safe to update to 1.8. Unfortunately the precious stone plugin still doesn't support UUIDs - despite being actively developed. Hopefully UUID support will land shortly, otherwise I will have to reimplement it in opticraft - which is annoying but can be done.

For now, please hold out on your name changes.

Thanks for taking the time to do this, I can't imagine its very pleasant.  Do you know if areas with city protection will work via UUID when your updates are done?

What happens if you change the name but you never log on to Opticraft until they update? Will you still have issues with balances and homes? Also what about servers that are fully updated to 1.8,
Will those servers have issues?
Thanks!

Anyone who changes their name before the server update, no.

You will most likely still lose your stuff, your old name will not have a UUID linked to it - just your new name. Only way to avoid is to not change your name all together. Servers that are updated to 1.8 still might have problems if the plugins running on them aren't updated to support UUIDs.

You'd still lose your protection stones im afraid.

PS - have added a /whowas command which will show you the past/current names of someone.
