Does anybody have any good tips for making money? I tried mining, but i can't find enough ores (yes, i was branch mining) and I'm trying to build a big automatic melon which, when big enough, bring in  a TON of money, but i need protection stones. Please help!

Good point, You can always take a loan. or just work your way up there.

If you don't want to get screwed over, just work your way up there. taking loans is a bad idea.

Yeah you can start one. You might not finish  it all, but 12k is enough.

I have an idea. Go to the live map. Find some coordinates almost at the borders of the map, and then travel to that location.
Find a cave or something, or start digging around and get yourself undergound. Then, if you find a mineshaft, I belive would be too much. I found a mineshaft 2 weeks ago, and I was there for about 8 hours. I was mining like crazy the uncovered iron, coal, redstone, and even diamonds.
If you can affort a fortune pix, then buy one and use it on coal, redstone and diamonds. You will be amazed.
I returned with 30+ stacks coal, 30 diamonds, 4? stacks redstone, about 10 blocks lapiz and some more that I dont remember.
I dont mine to sell things. I collect them for a future possible project. But still, it was a good minning trip.
The new borders, are more wealthy than the rest of the map somehow. Many people admit that.
So, why dont you try? I used two diam. pix and one enchanted. Moreover, I found about 5 spawners that I lost them afterwards. So, if you make it your home, you will be able to get much more.

Make the farm with the money that you have. When you got more money from the farm, you can make it bigger. And so can you make a very big farm.

firstly,make a small melon farm and collect the melons with your bare hand. Then when you get about 15 k feom your small melon farm, you can either make a new town or any projects such as roller coasters and more to get MORE money faster. Then it depends on how big the automatic melon farm is going to be.i would say 100x.100.... Then you would need 9 coal protection which is 13.5 k.. You would need 5 k for the materials so you would need 20k in total as you would need some emrgency money. Well i think this is the way to earn money fast.....

slaves cost no money 
A good way to make money is to hire an xp farm or make one, then enchant some weapons and sell them at auctions on the forums.

I have already begun to collect pistons for an automatic melon farm, and i have 70 pistons. None of them cost any money.
I really like spamarian's idea of going on the live map. Thanks.

Just build your farm layer by layer and wait until you have enough to continue to build higher and higher...That's what i did and on the plus side to that you'll have a steady income once the melons/pumpkins sart coming in...
