The fact that you cannot tell where the link will take you is too large a risk for the small inconvenience of having large links in chat from time to time. Don't think this will be implemented.

The fact that this COULD be used to cause harm shouldn't scare you out of using it. In fact, this caution would not help in the least bit because if someone were to want to trick someone into clicking on a malicious link, they could just manually plug the link into tinyurl and post that.
That takes more time, people are lazy.

I rarely see links on our server chat anyways.

Isn't necessarily a necro, Just seeing if I can persuade optical.
Mojang added the link prompt because its telling you to only click on it if you trust the sender. If I were to msg a friend, they'd know to trust me. If a random guest goes "if u want a free ipad go to xx.nu" you shouldn't click on it.

I know its spammy, but I prefer the long links. I can tell exactly were I'm going to be directed.
