You can store spawn eggs in a chest, therefor they can be stolen. You can't store exp in a chest.
Once you use a spawn egg, the mob is owned by the server, not you. Exp is always yours.
Players can kill the mobs you place. Exp cannot be killed.

That's the difference, and in my opinion why this shouldn't be implemented.

Chests are protected in general, which prevents other people from getting access, so if someone is able to steal your stuff, it's no-one's fault but your own.

There's only so much you can do to prevent someone griefing you. Besides, people can kill other people's mobs as it is now, but if you could buy them on the market, they'd be easier to replace if lost. This means that your reason is the very reason they should be implemented, as it would make griefed animals easier to replace, which somewhat minimizes the grief.

Ideally, some sort of protection for mobs in general needs to be implemented; IE, if they're within a protection zone, the only person that can kill them is the owner of the zone.

Edit:

Also, there is a way to protect mobs:

Breed them until you have at least 4, then put 2 of them in a small room which has a protection stone near it. That way, if the others are killed, you have a way to breed more. The other way is to simply protect the area they're in completely, although I know that a large enough area isn't really feasible to protect, but an inaccessible-to-everyone-but-you room is pretty feasible.

But again, you'd have just the same methods of protecting mobs with spawn eggs as you do without them, only, with spawn eggs they're easier to replace.

I just noticed something,

under donations, someone could pay $5 for 50 experience levels.

Only issue is that if you die, you lose all of those levels, correct?

Has there been any issue with players donating for that package, and then complaining to staff about it? I assume it hasn't for one reason or another because the donation package still exists.
Spawn eggs would be the same as there would be a couple ways (such as death) that could cause you to lose the eggs. If people haven't complained about losing their exp from donating, then why would complaints from spawn eggs be any worse?
Exactly! It's almost the same. And horses, yaknow. It's less trouble.

I was merely showing how spawn eggs and exp differs on the server, and those were just examples of potential issues with this suggestion. Also, there's no such things as 'griefing animals'. You can't own mobs on the server, so paying for spawn eggs would just be a waste of money, and you'd be better off finding them for free.

True, you can't own animals, but if you have lead some to a base and are using them yourself, then someone killing them could be counted as griefing. However, if you don't count killing someone's animals as griefing, then saying that they can easily be killed by others as griefing is kinda moot.

My biggest concern, however, is villagers. These aren't easy to get, as it requires having a splash potion of weakness and a golden apple. It seems golden apples take 9 time more gold to craft these days. I'm not personally complaining, as I've managed to get 4 villagers total this way and create 2 separate villages, but it would have been preferable to be able to just buy a couple of spawn eggs to start my village off.

Also, what's the point of the market at all if you can apply the argument of 'you can just go out and get it for free'? Having spawn eggs on the market wouldn't completely replace getting mobs for free, they'd just make it less time consuming to do so. They'd also make it so you could create a farm in the air more easily instead of having to have farms on the ground.

I think even cooler than spawn eggs would be the plugin someone told me about that lets you throw chicken eggs at an animal. If you hit an animal with the chicken egg, then the animal/mob disappears and the chicken egg becomes a spawn egg! Now THAT would be amazing.

Logblock doesn't cover animals, how wouldn't the op replacing them know that you didn't kill the animals yourself?

They wouldn't, however, being unable to prove you've been griefed won't change the fact that you've been griefed.

Anyway, that's a slightly different subject, as that would be debating whether you should make it possible to log animal kills so griefing animals can be prevented.

My point was, having spawn eggs would only make it more likely that animals of yours would be killed by others simply because there is more animals to have killed. Even that's debatable, as being able to use a spawn eggs to place an animal will make it easier to put them in secure locations, such as a building with protection stones that only you can access.

The market will not carry spawn eggs.
