i dont quite seem to get it, what can the tool do more, then just calculating it

first pos x100 y-50 z10
2nd pos x50 t-20 z12

difference x50
              y30
              z2
total distance 82 [x50 y30 z2]

takes no effort at all

...Because you are thinking linearly. What if you wanted to trace the edge of a track to see how long it was? If the track wasn't just made of strait lines, then you would have a very tough time doing it.

Also, consider the implications of being able to see how far you went if you started and stopped in the same place. In that case, a pedometer would really come in handy to track the length of your path.

Be creative. If you HAVE to try and find a reason to shoot this down, you may be able to. I find that it is much more fun to imagine the possibilities.

You could always just press F3 and write down your coordinates and then subtract or add based off of how many blocks you walked

step 1 press F3
step 2 remember your coords
step 3 walk
step 4 check coords
step 5 substract bingo?

isnt this easy enough?

and we have /measure already

This is what I do, but a measurement command wouldn't be so bad to cut down on the time.
