What should I do with this computer?

I was going through my works storage when I came across a bunch of computers. Most of them were 6 to 7 years old, but one was around 1 year old. So I picked it up and took it home to run some tests.

Turns out inside it theres:
intel i7 core processer, 8 cores, 2.8GHZ
12GB Ram

Only downside is that it has Windows Server 2008 which neither I nor anyone at my work has used ever, and we probably dont have a use for a server.

So ill ask you guys, should I leave Windows server 2008, get windows 7, or any other OS?

You could learn to use the current OS as it seems it was built for it. Then again if you want to use it you could get windows 7.

Overclock that beast! I have the same chip running at 3.8ghz. Just don't try to do it with the stock cooler

Oh, and the i7's are hyper-threaded quad-core. That's why Windows sees it as 8-core.

I was gonna get one of them but instead i went for i5 which is quad core but has no hyper threading. ah well, at least it has turbo boost.

Fine, you want me to contribute spartan? Well it seems whoever set up that computer intended to use it as either a server or was using it for rendering, not an at home desktop. And like lumin said, it doesnt have 8 cores it has 4 with hyperthreading. If you want to use it as a desktop to play games you wont need to overclock it since the clock speeds are already enough to max out pretty much every game on the market. Does it have a gpu in it? Also if you are just going to use it for games you could sell some of that ram.

No video game to date uses more than 4gb of ram.

But what if you have other applications in the background. When i have minecraft running with other things I use 6-7gb of RAM.
