Why Cant We Make Cobbblestone Generators

I cant understand how its hard to mine cobble. Its like what, three, four blocks below you? And torches, just put them next to your pick on your items list and just switch them. If you mined enough, you'd have a chest full of cobble within a week.

It's quite possible to make a 100% efficient cobblestone generator, and to make it as big as you want it, using a pulse generator and pistons (I made it myself in creative mode). However, the only reason you would need to make this is if you were making a really huge project where you needed obscene amounts of cobble and you don't have time to mine all of it.
