You have to be trusted to use water buckets.  Only Ops and admins can place lava.  Ops and admins can place water for you as well.  You can also ask a trusted member (orange names) if they can help you out with placing water.

Rogueish is right, this is because within 10 minutes of starting, a player could have found 3/6/9 etc. iron, made a bucket found water and it is super easy to grief. Lava would be even worse...

That's correct, though there's talk of eventually allowing Ops to rank a player to trusted.

when will the server reset exactly? tobs said something about updating the plugins and that it would take a week, but i haven't seen any announcements yet.

Probably after the bukkit is updated(next few days) and after the spawn has been prepared. And when Optical has time.
