this reminds me of the banning of porn websites in Dubai (Where I lived for 11 years) , As far as I've heard, people always got proxies, or found new ways to bypass the blocks.
I don't find SOPA or PIPA as a threat to internet freedom at all.

I've looked that the use of SOPA & PIPA, and it has nothing to do with piracy, It's a card used to distract most people away from the current economic, social, and class inequality crisis.

This is how it works.  People complain about bankers stealing their money, Pass a bill that takes away their other freedoms, Will they protest Internet freedoms or government allowing them to steal money?

People are either concerned about one more than the other... Now I don't believe anyone has asked congress if it's related, but if anyone asks, they will obviously deny it's related that they are passing this bill when there is unrest going on.

I believe PIPA is the European version of this, and If any of you are aware of the euro-economic situation, You'd understand that there's a lot of unrest about the euro currency and how it's been an issue for European countries.

They just pull this crap every time anyone's upset.
the same way some governments go to war with another nation to stay in power and "Unite the country together against a foreign enemy" It works, but I don't think it's worth it.

the problem is proxies wont work because it gives the government the ability to REMOVE the website from the internet.
you cant access what isnt there

As a matter of fact they cannot "Remove" the website off the internet, but what it does is that it blocks whatever connects you to the website.

So basically when you type in "www.google.com" In reality that's just a "nickname" for the real website which is "173.194.65.103" google.com is just an easier way to get there.
So if you go up and type "173.194.65.103" You will be redirected to www.google.com.

Now what SOPA & PIPA does, is that when you type www.google.com They don't send you to "173.194.65.103/" They would send you to another IP number that would say "The website has been blocked, ect ect" Although they cannot block websites in other countries, this would only work on the USA (For SOPA)

now in the case of mega upload, they didn't use SOPA to take it down, What they did was they pressured the Domain name provider of megaupload to take down the website ,so the people who were hosting www.megaupload.com (As far as I assume) and took it down this way. The case with SOPA & PIPA would basically allow the government to "Block" websites like www.thepiratebay.org, Although what I understand so far, Is that if you directly enter the IP adress of the website www.thepiratebay.org or (194.71.107.50) It wouldn't be blocked.

So to answer your question, with SOPA & PIPA they won't be able to "REMOVE" Anything from the internet, but rather block it. since most pirate websites are outside of the USA.

Not sure if this was addressed... But the creator of MegaUpload was arrested and had his website shut down due to scamming millions upon millions of dollars.

He has scammed over $73,000,000 and is doing time in prison now... He also had the #1 ranking in Modern Warfare 3 worldwide :)

Right, Megaupload has nothing to do with SOPA. Since SOPA wasn't passed yet, you can't really say it was an attack by SOPA, plus SOPA is an act, not a group or something, It's basically another tool that the US government uses to spy & control people.

i have been mind-f%&^ed, made to look like an idiot, AND proven wrong in one post..
well done! you deserve a cookie :D
*claps*

EDIT: you have also just discovered how to bypass sopa and pipa ;)
all we would need is to stockpile IP addresses of the sites that would be blocked.

IF you live in the USA, Now if you're caught pirating in the USA, you can get up to 4 years in jail I think, and up to 250,000$ in fines.
Now on the other hand, SOPA & PIPA can become tools to pressure the Domain name providers into stopping to host the websites or they may face charges (IF they are US based)

I don't think we should be paranoid about this at all, Just say "no", if the government ignores it... I don't think the population would be too happy with ongoing war, recession (Prolly another great depression), Drones flying around & spying on everyone, overpowered & corrupt police, social inequity, executions, extreme prison conditions and a low education bar... The US government would either take away the rights of the population slowly without them noticing (Which they already are).

To be honest, I don't think anyone would really do anything about it.. SOPA passing or not, I'm glad I'm living in Canada instead ^^
Legal Piracy ftw.

And thanks for the cookie :D

Good, pirates are no better than thieves.

By the way, I'm not sure where you get your info from, but piracy is illegal in Canada too.

No, It's completely legal as long as it's used for personal use, and not re-sale. So if I pirate a bunch of movies & sell them to some people, that's illegal, but if I pirate a bunch of movies & watch them myself, that's legal.

Quote from: wikipedia
2004: BMG Canada Inc. v. John Doe
The court further found that both downloading music and putting it in a shared folder available to other people online were legal in Canada. This decision dealt a major blow to attempts by the CRIA to crack down on file sharers

Countries where sharing files without profit is legal
Downloading copied music is legal in some countries in the context of the copyright, such as Canada,[16] The Netherlands,[17] Spain,[18] and Panama, provided that the songs are not sold. In Canada it is legal to download any copyrighted file as long as it is for noncommercial use, but it is illegal to distribute the copyrighted files (e.g. by uploading them to a P2P network). [19]

I'm not liar nick, I know my Law, otherwise I wouldn't be a pirate.
And no, Pirating is not like thievery, Piracy is like someone buying the movie/game/music and copying it so all his friends can use it.
That's just like going to a cooking school & learning a recipe, and after learning the recipe you teach it your friends & family.
Under piracy law, sharing that recipe becomes illegal, because all your friends didn't go & pay the cookery school to learn the recipe, but instead got it for free.
So under law...they would all be criminals.

Making File sharing illegal doesn't work, as I've proved, It damages the creativity of the internet. Under SOPA, simply linking to a copyrighted video could force people to shut down their websites, or have them arrested, which is ludicrous.

Bottom line is, Hollywood is greedy for more of it's money, and wants to force everyone to find no other way to entertain themselves other than go spend it on their garbage.
Plus according to research, most of the money saved by pirates, actually end up being spent on entertainment anyways, so all those companies aren't really losing that much money anyways.

I pirated Skyrim, and I didn't like it. I didn't want to pay 70$ to play a disappointing game that I ended up uninstalling anyways.
And other games aren't available for sale anymore, such as Red alert 2, or Cossacks: Back to war, ect ect, and there's no other way to get them but from people who already own the files.

With these new laws enacted, It will become illegal to download or upload games that are no longer being sold.
