Ban appeals change suggestion
« on: April 06, 2012, 03:54:36 pm »
Hi, Dshock336 here

Have you ever seen how some people grief a lot, and do it purposely, but only get 7 days? And have you ever seen someone make a one time accident and got thier first ban, but even after appealing still get 5 days? I think this is unfair. So, my suggestion is that higher members that are trusted, such as long time operators, admins and other very trusted people, should pick an odd amount of people, maybe 9 or 7 or something, who are all different, they do not do things the same, so there is variety. So the Point is, these people would form a kind of Jury, the person who banned them having a stronger effect on the "vote". This way, there will be more people to do a "checks and balances" type of system, and say, "Hey he didnt do anything that bad, he should get less", or "Hey she griefed a lot, lets give her a lengthier ban". If you like the idea, feel free to customize it, to make it work better for this server. Whether it is a good or bad idea, thanks for taking time to read my whole post  :).

                                                                                                                                  Thanks

Ban appeals would take too long using that. What we have now is decent, however, we are exploring possibilities of improving the ban appeal system.

Ok thanks for considering it. Just wanted to try to make it a little more fair so people in the future dont get 5 day bans for 1 time accidents.

Thanks!

I think that the moderator+ that banned the player should always take care of the ban appeal because they know what they banned you for, not anyone else.

We do make a conscious effort to have the moderator that banned the player to make the final call because they do have the final call with the appeal that they have to take care of, but when there are mods that are absent for a long time or if they no longer have moderator privileges, someone has to step in to the appeal sooner or later.

This is not really an issue for us, because our moderators reply to the appropriate appeals that they have issued the bans toward-- albeit with some form of a reminder.

I think it would be helpful to maybe lock all ban appeals to the people who posted and mods+. On most ban appeals i see outside people commenting, which is unhelpful.

While locking an active appeal would be helpful, it keeps the person that created the thread from replying to the thread if they have questions or concerns about their appeal or to figure out how long they have left. We really do need to crack down on all the other outside posts, but a few have led us to important tip-offs on certain players.

Certainly, those that are directly involved with the appeal or with the covering situation are free to voice their opinions, but outside of that it is difficult to dodge and weave through off-topic posts.
