If you're referring to melon/ pumpkin farms in your city, you might not need to worry so much on that since they won't be usable in a couple of days anyway. As an alternative, you can either sell all the materials to the market or utilize them in a different way (like a temple with a main door that opens/ closes-- things like that)
As for the basements, I'm sure something can be done.
