Nickname Donation
« on: May 06, 2012, 06:00:13 pm »
I was looking through the donation page, and I was rather disappointed to see that there was no option for players to get a nickname. (Displayed instead of your username -- Most servers include a "~" in front of nick names so they're distinguishable.)

I was wondering if there was any plan to add this, or any chance of it getting added?

I plan on donating when I have some money to spare, which will hopefully be when I get paid for one of the websites I'm currently building. (I don't spend any of my website money on bills. Lately I've started saving for a Z28 that my brother has had for a number of years, but I'm sure I could spare some to donate.)
I would love for that to be an option when that time comes though. (I don't enjoy "Myskillzownu" being displayed. I much prefer "Dave".)

And if it does get implemented it might be a good idea to only allow users to change their nick once per donation (stopping people from changing over and over), and to prevent someone from getting a nick that another user has.
(I know that's probably common sense, but still.)

And while I'm posting this, I'd also like to bring the voting pop-up window:
I think it would be nice to stop displaying when users click "Don't show me this anymore."
I personally vote, and getting hounded by that 24/7 is kind of annoying.
It would be an easy fix with a PHP or JavaScript (though some users don't enable it) cookie, and you could just tell the cookie to expire after 24/48 hours. That way users still get reminded, but they aren't completely hounded by it.

You can donate to get a customized title that you can change at will.  So you can, for example, have "[Dave] Myskillzownu:"

I know, but ~Dave is so much cleaner than [Dave] Myskillzownu:

Short, simple, memorable, and to the point.

If there's no plan on ever adding it, I would also be willing to offer any of my services in exchange for one. (I'd be happy to do anything related to Web Development, Tech Support, or Video Production. (Possibly a server video -- I know what I'm doing and I'd be willing to make a very good one in exchange for a title.)

All in all donating would be nicer and easier, but an "I scratch your back you scratch mine" could work too, if you're even interested in it.

I know what you mean, but I highly doubt it's going to happen.

We decided we would not allow nicknames because it just makes more work for our moderators. So there is almost no chance this will happen, sorry.

As well as what Nick said, what happens if there is two "Daves"? Then you either can't tell the difference, or can't let one have what they paid for.

Agreed... And what if someone gets "Dave" before you do, then makes a complete ass of themselves and gets banned, then you appear with the name "Dave".  Think that would go over well?  I'd hate to see the spam PM's you would get.

My initial thought is names are given on a first come, first serve basis.

I also don't believe it would create too much work; I've seen it implemented on servers before and it worked nicely. (I do believe it was for Top-Donaters only though (which I was), and that was $50+. They did also received other perks, such as the ability to spawn items.)
And, assuming this server is running essentials, there is a command you can type to determine a players username in the event that it's needed. (Though if they griefed or something along that line their real name would be displayed, not their nick.)

Someone could beat you to a nickname the same as they could to a Minecraft name. The only difference being, there's a much smaller player-base on this server than the whole of Minecraft. With that said, you will have a much higher chance of getting your desired name.

Maybe they could be offered in a manner that's harder to achieve than donating, as to avoid a "large" number of nicks. All I know is I much prefer to have my nick displayed.
Oh well, when I'm not flat broke and can donate I may just go for the /tpa.

Using /whois on a player displays the Nickname first then the actual username.

For example, it currently displays the first line as:
"myskillzownu is myskillzownu"

With a nickname, it would read:
"Dave is myskillzownu"

However, not every single player will be using /whois all the time.

And I would agree with everyone else -- Nicknames would not only make things confusing, but it's also not actually necessary here. Every server is different. If we don't see a beneficial use for a certain feature, why use it?

How often do you truly need a persons real name?
And the ~ at the front would let you know they have a nickname set before you type in your command.

The point isn't that it's beneficial, it's just, in my opinion, nice.

I'll stop arguing though; the consensus is against it and I see no reason to carry on a lost cause.

Everytime.

We would need your real username to TP to you, etc.

As Xeadin said previously, you would have to use the /whois command to find out the real name, but adding on to this suggestion. Perhaps we could have a donation package to raise the 8 character limit of the /changetitle command. Granted it should not go up any higher than 15 characters, but still it'd be, in my opinion, a good package.

It will create more stress for the server in general. You could have people with the same nickname. Mods+ will have a harder time identifying players. Etc
