During all of my recent mining digging my new base, I've been contemplating what to do with what will become around 75 double chests of cobble, and whilst on one of my random internet browsing spree's, i found myself watching star trek episodes from the 80's, then i thought, that would look cool in Minecraft, and yes, i know, it's been done before, but in classic, my plan is to do it on the SMP server.
I'm not looking for any help, me and my friend have a tendency of taking on overly ambitions projects, my friend being 'Ugalyboogaly' he's only a member, but he doesn't talk in chat, as it's usually me & him on skype, so he's not trusted, but he's been helping me an awful lot recently, and we decided to actually build something with what we're mining, but what I'm asking for, is an opinion;
it's 100 blocks in diameter
Also, i've just realised that the underside shape is in some dire need of some re-shaping, this topic helps me spot my own mistakes :p
The USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D :

Progress so far : as of like, 1 hour of work :
Warning : i play on quake pro FOV so it makes things look a tad... abnormal , like circles, for example

yes, i know, it's been done before
It sure has, but don't let that stop you! Here's a couple videos for inspiration! ;D
USS ENTERPRISE (D)

USS ENTERPRISE (A)

I'd suggest you go with the -A- version because it's smaller and, in my opinion, a much more Minecraft friendly design.
Good luck with your project!

Yeah, the fact is, most people who've built it in minecraft, have done it with classic, or with too many items, zombe mod -etc
My plan, was all legit, and much larger than the A version that you posted the link for.
But you say it's more minecraft friendly, and yeah, it is, but I'm wondering, if it's better to go for the challenge, or the slightly easier one, either way, I'm sure it'll be fun :)
-Thanks for the opinion :)

I'd suggest starting with the smaller and easier one. If you complete it, then move on to the larger one as your second project. The smaller one is still pretty large and will require a lot of effort.

Ehh i don't know :), i always like to thing -Go big, or go home- ;)
But i'll see :)

The problem, I would see, with the big one is that it has a huge footprint. I'm assuming you're going to do it in the member+ world, so if you don't finish it that's a lot of space wasted. If you do finish it the thing would be epic. That said, the team working on the Enterprise D build (in the video) has been at it for over 6 months now and still hasn't finished it (with creative mode) so you could be talking about a very long-term project.
The other one, the Enterprise A, is much shorter term and won't take up as big of a footprint. The odds of you completing it are much higher, and I would truly love to see that.

Dedication is no problem for me and my friend, we spent 5 months building a parthenon 4x the actual size, only to have the server getting shut down, with about 2 months left, so, hearts broken after that ordeal. We are looking for another big thing to build :)

I like the D one. The A's vertical engines look derp IMO.

Exactly how big will this be?
-
The main disk will be about 90-100 in diameter, however nothing is final yet, ill probably start planning soon but this topic is just for peoples opinion on which model, but I reckon I'm going to build the D model as its just got more appeal with the type of engine it has :)
-
Good luck with it! I wonder when this is done...?
-
I'd say go for model D. ;)
-
Ive seen the lego version of this, just remake that
-
I've just started, got a lot of framework done so far, shall post a picture soon
I've only framed out half the circle, as at the other end, the shape shall change for the engine part that comes down.
