Title: I need help. Gaming PC help.
Post by: SalsaInABowl on September 17, 2012, 05:52:03 am
I need help. What kind of gaming PC should I get, or, if I build one, what should I really focus on upgrading? Where can I see all the specs and build one? Like what website? Are these questions getting ridiculous? Do you think optical likes Hot Cheetos? Are umadbro? Can Albert Pujols afford a cheeseburger? Derp?

Alright, getting serious again. Gaming PC help. Yup. Post away.

a really good site i would use is newegg.com, they have a lot of reviews and suggestions for every type of person.  Also i would focus on upgrading is def get a really nice core, quad-core perhaps an i7, 8gb ram, and then a good graphics card.  But when you combine the high end things, you have to have a good case and fans to control the temperature and everything.  Do you have a certain budget?

I would build your own, I can help you a little if you give me a price range.

It can be more expensive to build your own, unless you're going for a really high range pc. This is because proper PC stores get discount prices, while you have to pay for your own. Also, you don't get warrenty (If you screw up, its your money. If they screw up, they fix it for free).

I'd go for something like this, real top-of-the-range PC.

False. No matter what level computer you want to buy it will always be cheaper to build your own. This is because manufacturers up the prices since they have to assemble them and they know people will buy them. Plus you are paying for the company name also (alienware, apple, ect..)

Your second statement is also false, all the parts you buy are backed by a manufactures warranty, my graphics card itself has a lifetime warranty.

For the first statement, I spent considerable time investigating buying a medium end gaming pc. For roughly the same specs, I got better prices. Yes, if you want to buy from apple, you're going to have to pay for the brand, but I wasn't talking about buying from the big, well known suppliers.

The 2nd statement is true. I looked up on google "Graphics card warrenty", and this was an example (Nvidia in this one)

(click to show/hide)

What this is saying (Under the abuse section), is that if the graphics card did not work when it was sent to you, or is damaged by itself they will replace/fix it.

If you screw up while fitting it, that's a different matter.

My friend has one, they're good, apart from one thing. Don't leave a headphone plugged in xD
His brother walked off, and the wire was around his leg. They're so thin, they just fall over immediatly (If you stand them up, that is).

Smashed x51 = not good.

Oh, and apparently the screen they package with it is pretty terrible (Again, that is just what my friend said, could just be his opinion).

Lol claw, that is the exact same warrenty you get with a prebuilt. it wont cover any accidental damage. As a matter of fact for most prebuilts, even opening the case voids the warrenty on the whole thing.

Example time claw. Mid range desktop at bestbuy

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+HPE+Desktop+-+10GB+Memory+-+1TB+Hard+Drive/5563052.p?id=1218661381249&skuId=5563052

Price: $700

Mid range desktop I put together using similar parts (note this one has a HUGE upgrade in the GPU department, and when I say huge I mean more than double the power): http://i.imgur.com/4o50V.png

Price: $629 (plus you get dirt 3 for free, its a win, win  ;D)

Also note that when you put a pc together yourself you can always upgrade it. Pre built manufacturers often do not use the ATX motherobard standard meaning you will NOT be able to switch out the mother board without buying a new case. Not to mention most manufacturers lock your bios aswell.

Sorry, what were you saying? (Yes, it costs slightly more, but I always factor it in, its better than paying for a new computer).
And, if you buy a custom, prebuilt pc, why would you even want to open it (By the time new hardwear has come out, the warrenty will probably be void.

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMqJ0XXmBM8&list=UUI4Wh0EQPjGx2jJLjmTsFBQ&index=16&feature=plcp) should really help.

Pretty sure we're talking about mid-range, not the "Ultimate Gaming PC" (No, I didn't watch the video, but I assume that is what it is by the title)

(click to show/hide)

As to this, maybe you're right. I'll have a proper read of what you said tommorow, it's late and I need to finish work.

Out of experience, i was asking opticraft the same thing a long while back, and i even remember my dad telling me how much cheaper it is. It's like most things in life, the labour of assembling something adds a considerable amount more than doing it yourself. i built my own, i had no knowledge on it, just youtube and stuff.
Mine runs any of the latest games. (newest game i've tried is F1 2012.) and, games like crysis 2, Battlefield 3, all perfectly fine, and i only spend around £500 on mine, in dollars, i guess that's about 700$. I highly doubt you can get a prebuilt for £500 / $700 that runs all the latest games perfectly fine.

Alienwares are good computers but they tend to be expensive just because your paying for the name and whatever else, you could get a nice HP or toshiba that are the same probably for cheaper. I have a high end HP laptop and I really enjoy it and have not had problems with it at all.

I can help out too, I am currently on a custom made 1600$ computer that I assembled myself.
If your looking for something good, I would recommend getting a
Radeon 6850 (200$),
some mid range i5 (200$),
4 or 8 GB of RAM(50$-100$),
1TB harddrive(100$), no SSD.
A minitower or mid tower should work(100$),
and a cheap mother board that is around 100$.

All of that should total around 750$, if your building it yourself.

5 essential parts of a PC:
Harddrive
RAM
CPU
Video/Graphics card
Motherboard/bus

Other stuff:
a case (you actually don't HAVE to have one, you can put it inside a cereal box for I know)
Solid State Drive
DVD/Blu-ray
built in Wifi adapter
Liquid cooling system :P

Post by: Nick3306 on September 18, 2012, 02:28:10 am
Tyler you can knock $50 off of the case by getting an antec 300 (amazing case).
And you can get the 6870 for $170

It is also worth nothing that it is way cheaper to go AMD for the mobo and processor plus the current AMD CPUs, while not as powerful, will be able to max out all games for the next few years. If you are just going to play games and not do any CPU intensive stuff (gaming is not very cpu intensive) then i see absolutely no reason to go intel as of right now.

That entire list is a joke. You are basically setting fire to a pile of money. Not to mention you get NOTHING from sli ing 680's since 1 680 can max out every game most likely for the next few years.

32GB of ram is a joke in itself. You can post videos on youtbe with 1GB of ram lol, the 6 you have is more than enough.

I guarantee that you will NEVER use 3TB of harddrive space since I am assuming you will put a lot fo your games on the SSD along with windows.

And claw. It wouldnt be those exact parts, but some would stay the same (case, PSU)

Your paying something like 3000$ for a system and your going to use 1500$ of it at most. The rest is just burning money.

This not because of your ram at all, especially not with 6GB. Your CPU or GPU is what is causing the lag. I can record BF3 videos on fraps with my 4GB of ram, I'm sure your 6 is fine.

Exactly. I've got 4GB of RAM on my laptop, but Minecraft actually runs worse on it than my desktop at home (which has 2GB, but a better GPU).

Also, to all the people posting part lists and costs: aren't you forgetting the OS?  Windows 7 Home Premium is $120 on Microsoft's site for an upgrade, $200 for the full version.

Get any i7 processor, and anything better than a Nvidia 560ti should be good without lag

Go make me a computer that's under $800 and show me it, I want to see what you choose out. Make sure you include the keyboard, mouse, monitor. The monitor size should range around 24" and I'd like it to be a LED light with no glare.

Let's see what you can come up with, I'm not good at making gaming PC's, so I'm not trying to make myself look better than you, I actually might take in consideration what you put together and get it.

Yes Nick, I'm loving the image (http://i.imgur.com/4o50V.png) you posted, it gives me a nice cushion for a good monitor/keyboard.

Sorry tyler but i call bullshit on this. BF3 is a GPU heavy game and seeing as how I have an HD 6870 and can barely stay above 40FPS in BF3 on ultra, there is no way in hell you can get 30 fps while recording with a weaker video card than me.

Yeah, that's almost identical to my keyboard on my MacBook, I love it as well. Very easy to use.

well what would you suggest then and 6gb still lags alot nick i can barely use fraps without lag

I have a i5 that clocks at 3.5 GHz, and a Radeon 6850. I can FRAPS at 30 frames/sec on Battlefield 3 ultra settings.
Sorry tyler but i call bullshit on this. BF3 is a GPU heavy game and seeing as how I have an HD 6870 and can barely stay above 40FPS in BF3 on ultra, there is no way in hell you can get 30 fps while recording with a weaker video card than me.

There you go Nick. Smooth as glass.
I went to the middle of a tank superiority round. 1 objective. 64 players.
Biggest map in Battlefield history, Bandar Desert, 4x5km of pure awesomeness.

Lowest it dipped to was around 20 or higher FPS. Not the best, but definitely playable and watchable.

P.S. Sorry about my engineer kit. I know it's god awful but I never play engineer anyways. Usually medic or support.

Dude, if your desktop resolution is 1080 why do you play at 900?

EditL quick question, how did you get your fraps to record with the FPS counter, mine seems to hide the fps counter.

Don't just me on that video. I was just jumping around, have seizures and doing 360 spins to prove my framerate stays constant.
In terms of gameplay, that was the worst video imaginable for me.

False. No matter what level computer you want to buy it will always be cheaper to build your own. This is because manufacturers up the prices since they have to assemble them and they know people will buy them. Plus you are paying for the company name also (alienware, apple, ect..)

Researched it a lot more (Like 5+ hours).
In most cases you were right. My bad, sorry ^^

In fact, I even decided to buy parts and build a computer. Thanks Nick :)

Bit late to this, but ain't been able to get on the site much.
One thing, Snape, have you managed to buy the parts yet ?
and another thing, i run a 6850 as well, and also play BF3, and, can confirm what tyler's been saying, easily playable even when recording. only downside for me, is my piece of crap hard drive so takes a while to load into a game )':
