Peoples names that appear above their heads are always white or grey(I cant remember), but I think it would be nice if these were the same color as the rank of the player. It would help me when I teleport to some to place water, but they yell at me fro being a griefer. If they saw the blue or teal name of a mod or op, they may not freak out making our jobs easier. Not only this but I'm sure it would look cool! This is possible, I have seen it on other servers, but thanks for considering this!

I'm not sure what it would take to do this but I like the idea.
-
I have thought of this idea for a long time but never brought it up. It would help in some cases.
-
No.
-
No.
At least say why you say no. I personally think it wouldnt be a terrible idea, but isnt really needed. People dont freak out THAT much. :p

yes they do
-
Sorry, didnt know you were a mod and dealt with people like that. -.-
-
Optical had a plugin like this before where it would appear in the tab list instead and I think that can be configured also in the plugin itself. But I see no difference anyways.
-
I like this idea! It would help for the players familiar with the ranks (colors of the ranks) but not necessarily for the clueless players.
-
No.
^
Pretty sure this would be clientside anyway, and require everyone to install a mod, as I have never seen it used in a server before, and I've seen a lot of servers.
-
Yeah, why not? Sounds nice. Plus, it'd make our player names a bit less boring.

Well ive seen a server where people had coloured names and I did not install anything.
-
I've seen this on a few PvP servers to define the team colours, but I don't see any use of having it here as optical or dejected might as well spend time developing something more useful. It would be intresting to have, but I can think of better things for them to spend time on ;)
-
I think it would be nice just to match the way it is on classic, but no one really cares.
-
No.
This seems to be your answer for everything.
I like the idea, and ive seen it alot on servers and i never had to install anything ither

You are my favorite poster because i am usually the one to come up with the smart ass remarks, but since I am not home much anymore, it feels good to know you are doing it for me.

Proper response would have been "Just doing my job Nick"
ONTOPIC: Not a bad idea, just not that useful
-
I've seen this on a few PvP servers to define the team colours,
It is very much possible as I also seen it on PvP. And claw please remember we are not still in alpha 1.7, where you cant do anything plugin wise. There are many very skilled Java developers out there which can do pretty much anything.

Agreed. They have much more important plugins to develop first. But this I do like this idea as it would also over come that problem of "mod grief" "yes, where?" "What are you doing in my house, stop griefing GTFO" ;)

Boom. http://dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/nametags/
Most plugins like this require some sort of API to run. (application programming interface) which basically means a program to run a program, in this case a plugin to run a plugin. Spout is a common API.
In other words it's not as simple as making a broadcast plugin. But that being said, it's still a nice idea.

It doesn't work very well with Essentials since each group inherit other permissions. Luckily the server permissions are based on pex, at least from what I know.

I was showing that as an example really. I'm sure if this suggestion went through, Optical would most likely code it himself.
-
I think its a cool idea,
But i don't really care if it happens or not because mainly everyone knows who is mod, operators, trusted, admin
It would look cool but it is not really useful.
-
I believe this is why we have titles. :)
-
Most mods, when it is a simple water placement don't speak when they first tp to the ticket. They just look around for where water should be placed. Thats why it might be useful.
-
Even though there are bad comments on this page I think it would be awesome! Coloured names above your head, how come I couldn't think of it :P.
-
good idea
-
i LOVE this idea this would be awesome if it happened ;D
-
Hey hey hey, I support this too :3
It's a good thing to have, but not a necessity. It'd be preferable if we could have it though! ^-^
-
I like as well.
I have been on numurous servers with this and it was awesome. Sometimes i need to know the ranks of people right away.
I could say it is easy to code, but i have no idea.
-
just /near
-
I get what igen just said, even though the colored names don't HAVE to happen I still love the idea. Hope this happens it would be awesome. ;D
-
Yes, Yes, Yes! Add It! :D
-
I like the idea :)
-
Would Trusted's get a gold name tag? Or would it be only for the Mods? If this is added
I think its a great idea ;)
-
Guys, watch the necroposts :)
-
Sorry and probably mods+ because they help out with more stuff than trustees can, like grief, lava and fire.

We should all get one!
We help each other and ALL of us make opticraft, opticraft!
i think could all get one (if we do add it in)
-
Guys, watch the necroposts :)
This thread is still up for discussion, just like every other suggestions thread.
-
This would be easy so when I see someone I can just see what rank they are without having to use commands etc.
-
I like this, and I had part in coding a very similar plugin on another mc server, and it was fairly easy.

Why not give it to opti
-
it was quite a while ago, and that code is god knows where, but I'll look around for it
-
Sounds like a good idea, we could use a fun addition rather than something serious.
-

Lol, optical OR dejected could make this, was it easy to code?

yes, yes it was
I actually took another plugin (don't remember which) and modified it, as it was very similar to this.
[EDIT]: I believe it might have been the plugin that puts colored names to match ranks in chat. Not positive though. I'm gonna look into it more.
-
there is a plugin called TagApi that does this
-
there is a plugin called TagApi that does this
really? maybe that's what I re-coded. hmm
-
there is a plugin called TagApi that does this
This doesn't work well with servers that have groups that inherit permissions from other groups, don't know if this server does that.

Oh yeah, I'd forgot it'd have to be compatible with permissionsex
-
This is only possible via plugins like TagAPI, which manipulate parts of the obfuscated miencraft server code. It is not possible through the bukkit api.
I do not like adding anything which relies on the native code, as it takes longer to update then the bukkit api. (See disguises breaking every single update).
However, since it isn't a huge feature, it might be worth looking into. I will need to double check if colour codes break skins however.
-
Sweet! I haven't seen any cases where it affects skins at all though.

Ive seen one, but that may not be the plugin.
-
Hope it all works out in the end
-
Ooh, I thought this was easy to add. A lot of servers have it...

Optical never said it was hard to implement, rather he wants to keep things around Bukkit.

Well, it's still difficult to get around it every update. Almost every server I go on they have this, they wouldn't have it if it was so hard every update...
-
I really hope this will work out. I love this idea.
-
I honestly think this is pointless.

I honestly think this is pointless.
The only thing I could see use with this in is if we ever get PvP (define teams in team based games etc.)

I was meant to say PvP (in general), not PvP server but whatever...

Ah, thank you for clearing that up.

It's neither. Now back on topic, the colored names are not really worth spending time on. It doesnt really add much in terms of gameplay.

it will for pvp, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it i suppose.

So does this mean we can call it confirmed?

there is no confirm or deny for this. it's a small feature that is difficult to do because the functionality is not built in to bukkit in any way. BUT it's important for pvp, so it may be worth the trouble. we'll see.
-
I don't understand how this will make a difference in PvP. Could somebody please explain?
-

red names = red team
blue names = blue team
?

Makes sense.

Personally I would like it. You know how you can see people's names through walls?
Well then you can see if the mod you wanted came to place water for u instead of some random guest who wants
to take your diamonds. Also when I hop around in spawn (Which I do a lot) I want people to see my rank!
So then in big parties I can tell how many people of certain rank came!
I'm sorry if this looks like jibberis, but all in all I think this would be cool
-
Er… butterflywolves… That's not at all a good reason to have the plugin implemented: to be a show off; that "I'm trusted, you aren't!" "Look at my GOLDEN, GLOWING name! Isn't it pretty?"… That's what I got from what you said……
-
As a player, this would be cool.
As a mod, I want this for staff only. >:( lol.
-
Sometimes I like not being able to be identified as a moderator...I catch people doing a lot of bad things like that.
-
Thata why you can go invisible...
-
Thata why you can go invisible...
Of course we can. But not all the time do I have the time to type that command.
-
This idea is great I love it
-
This just has to be done.
