yea so first off, the lava wouldn't be place-able.....
but it would be nice if us trusted or even everyone could carry lava buckets.
why? well because lava is technically the best fuel in the game
from a survival aspect i would use lava over any other fuel simply because it's over 10 times more efficient than coal, not to mention it's easily renewable.
Citation (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Lava#Lava_Bucket)
lava lasts 1000 seconds per bucket, even the mighty blaze rod pales in comparison to it at only 120 seconds
Citation (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Blaze_Rod)
not to mention buying coal or blaze rods in mass can be quite expensive whereas lava is just found free flowing
in an ideal situation i think anyone should be able to pick up and carry the lava buckets, however the staff would remain the only ones capable of placing the lava.
i'd even settle for buying pre-filled buckets from the market without the ability to place or pick it up, so long as i could use it in a furnace.
but oh well that's my idea let the nay saying commence
-
I like this idea, hope this gets implemented.
-
Great idea. Gives players a new item to use, and without harm. Might be tricky to put into use.
-
I like the idea, this I think was posted before and heresthe problem: dispensers can place lava

'Twas suggested before.... nothing ever came of it. It would be cool
-
This is a survival server after all. I like the idea. Just have to make it so it cant be placed in dispensers.
-
Love the idea! :o
-
I also love this idea ;D
-
Meh I am fine with coal
-
You do realize that lava isn't a renewable source unlike water, so there are only a limited amount of lava source blocks as there are coal.
Lava would be nice to smelt huge bundles of resources for large projects, but for something small or practical, coal and blaze rods are more effective.

on the contrary, while u can't just make a 3x1 ditch or a 2x2 ditch and take infinite lava, if you just cause it to fall and spread in all directions you'll get about 4 new source blocks. it's not exactly like water yes, but the end result is the same.
-
Ate you sure those are SOURCE blocks? Can you pick them up+ you couldnt place the lava to make it drop any way.
I do like this idea though
-
the lava that falls down does not turn into source blocks. It may seem that way since it wont go away but it is a kind of bug. You can take try and pick it up all you want but you can't since it isn't source.

i suppose you're right, guess they changed it and i never noticed.
of course that doesn't change the fact that the nether is full of lava..... i'd just fill up a double chest worth of buckets and use them at my leisure.
would take about a year of everyone farming it to clear it all out

we dont want that to happen, it wouldnt be good

i suppose its irrelevant now, but we can create a 3x1 or 2x2 trench out of a pool of lava, turns out that works both ways.
secondly y wouldn't it be a good thing? all the lava animations in the nether causes a lot of lag so getting rid of some of it might actually be a good thing
not to mention it wouldn't be farmed out nearly that fast since not everyone would farm lava, just those that want to use it for fuel, since you wouldn't be able to place it.
also side note: for someone such as myself digging out a large area underground, it sure would be helpful if i could scoop up lava with a bucket rather then trying to fill in the hole, and again since i can't place it, burning it in a furnace seems like a great way to smelt the 30 chests of cobblestone i have to make stone brick, just sayin. <== actual situation where this is a good idea
-
I cannot imagine the Nether looking like a lava-layered canyon near the bottom :o
Flowing lava is much worse than a stationary lake, since that uses more animations itself.
-
Couldn't every like hour there's a command the servers consul contol/ code thing sends though the server to delete all moveing lava in the nether ? Probraly won't work but hey, just throwing some ideas out there
-
i like da idea

You wrong lava in both forms are 16 frames does not make any sense. But well for HD(64/128) texture packs its a problem
-
Flowing lava needs more calculations because its figuring out the physics, not the animation
-
Couldnt you set this up the same way they set up fire charges?
-
I was told it was the fire in the Nether causing lag, not the lava. Second, it actually is possible to glitch to get a lava bucket, just rare and maybe needs lag. I've gotten 3 so far, but the idea seems good. And emptying out the Nether… I can't imagine that :o
-
Ok noting the physics calculations, I believe the game only checks to see if a physics calculation is needed.
if physics calculation is required
perform physics calculations
else
leave the block like it is
In other words there is only additional work done upon something changing with the lava, but if nobody picks up lava or nothing happens that would require a change in physics then the flowing lava still wont take more calculations than the stationary lava. You also need to remember that the game does look at every single block affected by physics to determine if something needs to happen. The game needs to calculate whether or not the lava needs to be flowing somewhere instead of simply staying stationary. It seems odd to us, but the computer doesn't know and must do a check every tick. However it wont recalculate physics unless deemed necessary.

Coal and Blaze Rods are just fine...I wouldn't mind it though.
-
i reckon its a great idea,
i don't see how it would make the glitches everyone is talking about.
-
It would be good if we could pick up lava but not place it, However this is not Tekkit so we would have to stand by the Furnace for 1000 seconds to get maximum efficiency and to add matirials to prevent wasteful heat, I prefer coal in that it does not all get wasted with say 1 stack, or you do not have to oversee when the furnace has nothing to smelt and add more stuff,
