Well basically, I can log in. I press update, and then after about a second, the screen says it encountered a fatal error.
Would anyone like to help me with this?

This needs to be in support. I would try googling it bc I've never encountered this before.

Okay, the exact text on my screen is:
Fatal error occurred (4): Users/macbookhd/Library/Application support/minecraft/bin/minecraft.jar
I am going to guess I need a new minecraft.jar?
-
Delete minecraft.jar and login
-
This always happens to me.
Try deleting or dragging out your whole minecraft folder and update after that.

the problem is ether you have mods that aren't updated. Or something is wrong with your .jar file. Ether way just simply delete your .jar and procede to login.

I know exactly what this is. You unzipped your minecraft.jar with Archive Utility or something else. Minecraft doesn't nessecarily reconginize the minecraft.jar because basically, it's all of the classes extracted into a folder with a .jar extension. Delete your bin folder and launch minecraft. Hope it helps

The only mod I ever use is Optifine, and I updated that to 1.4.2 before playing so that can't be it.
