Title: Warning - Do not reply to this email
Post by: Saeberus on May 02, 2013, 10:20:14 pm
Someone who is not optical or affiliated with the Opticraft staff has sent out this email:

It is important that you DO NOT reply to this email.

This is really interesting, how did someone do it? Could they have possibly hacked the system?

Hack what system? you can either hide your email or have it public, all the people that got these were public. We don't have an Opticraftmc@gmail,com email address, there's no threat, just wanted people to be aware that it's fake.

For future reference, the only official email you should ever trust will be @opticraft.net
But even then, optical has never sent emails like this to anyone, so only Server News posts should ever be trusted.

We, much like all other websites and online services will never request your username or password, so never respond to these sorts of emails regardless of the website or service.

Yould think they would come up with a better way than requesting login information -.-

Well I suspect most younger players would still be fooled, since phishing isn't exactly everyone's forte.

If you look closely at the email, then you could probably think that it's optical, but it's not. It's probably a banned player who got extremely mad and hacked into the forums, and got everyone's email addresses, and sent them out to all forum members.

Or he just used many of the public emails available. If he had "hacked" the forums, why would he need the passwords of players on the forums?

It wasn't a hacking. The person went to people who had their emails public and used them.

Well, passwords are stored as irreversible MD5 hashes (might be another one, but it's morning and I forget the other acronyms for the types of hashes used). If the person "hacked" the passcodes, then they would only get one-way encrypted hashes which can only be broken by brute force hacking.

No your email is public unless you choose to hide it, for example, I click your name and this comes up

(click to show/hide)

you saved me from a hacked account, thanks saeberus.

I'm interested about this hacker/fraud or whatever you want to call him.
If he is just a mad player then he obviouslly must not have respect for
other people's work and committments.

I'm just going to call him: HMB (he's mad bro).

now as for suspects, there are plenty of mad players, whether it was that
the couldn't get away with a grief/troll or just had a misunderstanding that
led to a fight, but the thing is there are too many players like this who go
on the server so we cant narrow it down unless we can somehow trace the
e-mail.

The point of this is to tell people to not reply to the email, not to get people to fall into this failed attempt at gaining information to peoples forum accounts.

90% of people use the same password for everything, so 90% of the people he phish's will have the same password on both the forums and minecraft.

Just a thought but....
If this happens to be an upset ex opticraft player then chances are they're some not so smart kid trying to piss off other people... And angry kids tend to make mistakes... Like phishing from the same computer they use to play mc.

So what I would propose is just using any one of the emails he sent to get his IP address (not usually displayed but its in the email header) then banning it from the forums to prevent further attacks. Also assuming they used the same comp for this and mc, we could figure out which player has that ip and then we'd kno who did it and if they're not already banned from the server we could take care of that to

Found no usernames matching the IP. I think we should just leave the whole situation alone, trolls will be trolls, and it's not worth out trouble.
