As you may, or may not, have heard, Minecraft's 1.6 update (The "Horse" Update) is planned to be released on Monday, July 1st. What does this mean? Well, it usually means that we'll get a lot of people asking/ requesting/ begging us to update the server immediately, but things are going to be a little different this time around.
"Why do you say that, Xeadin?"
The 1.6 update features a new client launcher, which supports the ability to switch versions with ease. What does this mean? It means that people will still be able to play on Opticraft without going through the hassle of manually switching their Jar files, which equates to less update spam, which means more time for us to focus on what needs to be done. Can we say, "Yippie Ki-yay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zXbdfHgp58)?"

Can we say, "Yippie Ki-yay?"
Yippie Ki-yay! :D
So we don't need to get people saying UPDATE PLZ. 1.6 looks fun. :)

Yippie Ki-yay :P

Saw this in the update logs, thanks xeadin

Will the horse start spawning as soon as the server is updated?

Yes, only in plains biomes though.
-
In addition, they're gonna be a pretty rare spawn to find as well, so be prepared for some days of exploration. If you've got saddles handy, it shouldn't be much of a hassle for you.
Since horse armor won't be found in any of the current worlds, they might be made available in the markets. That is not official, though, so don't quote me on that.
Horse armor may only legitimately appear once the borders of the current guest/ member worlds have been expanded, or when a new world is created (it may be a while before that happens, so don't expect that for some time).

Is it possible to reload the server the way you did to get nether quartz or does it not work for entities?
Sorry...am I asking to many questions
-
I think that all of the Overworld has been explored, within world borders, I mean.
-
Can't wait till 1.6

Yippie-ki-yay :D The info is also found in the login Update News thing.Yippie-Ki-Yay!!

1.6 already? Wow, I haven't been keeping track of that kinda stuff recently.

The good thing is that horses can be bred, so even if you don't find a lot, you can get more by breeding them. The one thing is that each horse will have different attributes, such as movement speed and jump height, so it'd be important to pay attention to which ones are good for events, such as races, obstacle courses, and such.
Also, mules and donkeys may appear as well. If you're in to long-distance travelling with a bunch of stuff, the mule is the way to go :)

This horse shit is confusing me... If only they added chinese horses

I think mules can only be bred. They won't appear naturally I don't think.

Mules spawn naturally, and horses can be bred.
I'm now curious where you're sourcing your info from.

I can't wait til the update, will horses only spawn in the new chunks like quartz?

No, just like any other animal, they will randomly spawn only in plains biome chunks. They don't have to be unexplored to be able to have horses spawn in them.

Actually, Ozzy is correct. Donkeys and horses spawn naturally, but you must breed a horse and donkey as in real life to obtain a mule.

also once you make a mule you can't breed it with a horse or donkey or another mule, they become sterile, as they would in real life

Ah, that makes sense now. Interesting mechanics, Mojang.
Speaking of Mojang, the official release date of the 1.6 update is July 1st. Just in time for the fireworks!

No they didn't. Quote from the official minecraft wiki page on horses: Normal horses and donkeys will spawn in the plains biome in the Overworld in herds of as few as 4 individuals.
They update that page whenever the slightest detail about a horse is changed.

I presume it is like when slimes were changed to spawn in swamps, they spawned in all swamps, not just newly generated ones.

well entities aren't like new ore that needs to get coded into the generation algorithm, since the biomes already exist it just gets added to the list of things that can spawn there.
unfortunately if my assumption is correct they'll be like all the other non hostile mobs which yea they spawn from time to time, but not that often and most of them get spawned in the initial generation of the chunk
