This place always seems to help me with my comp problems :D
So, i have a situation, i have a HDD with windows XP on it, using that, could i hook up my laptop HDD and transfer Windows vista onto it, or would it be cheaper/easier to just buy windows 7 and a new(er) HDD

I have no clue... If I were you, I'd just get windows 7, it's a lot better than vista.
-
You cant transfer different copies of windows, you will need to format (erase everything) Your hard drive then install a new copy of windows.

Can't you save everything on your HDD before re formatting everything?

My advice.
I used to have Vista for 3 years.
I have now Windows 7 as a basic operating system.
The best are Windows 7.
If you don't have serious issues, wait to buy Windows 8. These boot in 8''.
Anyway.. I havent understood exactlly what's the issue.
You can do partition the HDD.

ill just wait till christmas and get HDD + windows 7

You can use the same hard drive that you have now, you will just need another one to backup all your files onto or you will lose all of them.

I think you should just get Windows 7.
