Hello fellow "opticrafters" I just want to say this, and I think i might get my head bitten off for saying this. But i Believe that opticraft NEEDS more moderators. its 11pm in sydney and there is over 100 people on, not one of them is a moderator. i have seen numerous people asking for assistance and help, i can only provide little with water. But I feel helpless because people have greifers...
Opticraft you NEED more moderators and yes, i know you can't trust everyone on this but really... come'on there is over 100 people on and none of them are moderators.
i know this is a very short post, but i pretty much did cut most the crap and went straight to the point and i will do so again, opticraft you NEED more moderators or OP's on.
Thank you for reading =)

I notice this almost every day. Its been almost an hour since a mod has been on I believe. Maybe mods should have shifts? (not where they can only mod then, but to ensure we have someone holding down the fort at all times) Thanks bhouhton for bringing this to light and I was about to post the same thing.

The reason we dont have that is because mods could be busy irl during their shift, and it would interfere. I'll come on now.

We have 36 Moderators at the moment, and yes I know we may need more. But they don't grow on trees you know.

Obviously, but this is on the suggestions thread.

Okay
Thanks =)

one problem we have is people asking moderators for help with things they don't actually need help with.
grief should ideally be handled by protection stones, water can be handled by trusted (but bigger jobs certainly require moderators), members should be able to light their own portals with fire charges now (though i realize those aren't easy to come by).
it is my opinion that it is only a moderators job to make sure that things are running smoothly. moderate chat, make sure people are behaving, etc. not to provide basic services to the members.
the only rea issue i see right now is bugs with protection stones. but even that really requires an OP.

I see your point cschurz but, not all people buy protection stones. Greif will always be occurring with or without protection stones, people build things and when they do they may be low on money... some people can't afford diamond protection stones... so rarely the occasional greif will come along and you know, greif.
some trusted, not trying to disrespect anyone, but some trusted don't place water at all... i do my best that i can to, but i still can't because i continuously have to fill up water buckets.
we just need more moderators on to fix greif, that really my point of starting this topic.

i see your point as well, but it simply can't be a moderators responsibility to undo grief for every little thing when a member makes no attempt to protect a structure themselves. this is a survival server, not creative. establish yourself financially with a small home and farm or what have you - something easy to protect - and work your way up.
BUT, this is just my opinion, and our moderators are currently happy to undo whatever grief is reported, regardless of the amount of effort (rather, lack of effort) someone put in to prevent grief on the structure themselves.
and it's certainly not a trusted's job to place water - but at least they have the ability.
-
I think i agree with both of you we need more mods yes but there are some people who spam the mod help thing but i have noticed that there are usaly not mods on when you need them :D dont get me wrong i know mods work hard but if we had a few more we could get help more often
-
It's not that we need more mods, it's that we need mods who dont stop coming on after the first 2 weeks of getting mods.

I completely agree with cschurz on this subject. I wasn't always a mod, and when I wasn't I had to protect my things just like every other player does. Know the trick? Don't build big until you can afford to build big, which includes buying protection! By the time my base was done I had 30+ coal protection stones covering it, and I NEVER suffered grief. Trust me, there were a lot of people who tried. Right in front of my eyes!
That said, even now that I AM a mod I'm still buying protection stones to cover my stuff. Yea, that's right, BUY! I can't just summon materials out of thin air. Know why I buy PS stones still? I don't wanna fix my grief damage over and over again either. I already have enough to do when I get online. :P
Personally, if you suffer grief and it wasn't the fault of a failed PS stone, I really have no sympathy for you. You shouldn't build anything without being able to protect it. That's like buying a brand new Hummer without putting insurance on it. Sure, I'll fix grief when I'm called because that's my job, but I'll be the first one to tell you that you need to go buy a PS after I do. Trust me, you don't want Mods getting to know you because they always have to fix your grief. Mods have projects they want to work on too, and wasting their time with things you could have easily prevented is just not a good way to make friends with Mods. *LOL*
-
Honestly, saying mods should not be there to fix grief is ridiculous. It is part of a moderators job. While most members should use protection stones, we all know that is impossible because the stones are pretty expensive. If you dont want to fix grief, then maybe being a moderator is not for you.
-
I love how now we're getting off topic and starting to talk about greif, my original post was about the lack of moderators that were online... i only stated that a few people need help with greif and no one could fix it. That is why i started this topic. This topic was about the lack of moderators that were online, there are a few exceptional moderators/ops out there i must say! it just i know they all don't have time to play minecraft.
Maybe mods should have shifts?
I don't really want to be a mod yet, this is getting a bit out of hand my origional post was stating the lack of mods that were online, this isn't a mod application Nick. this is in suggestions.

Timezones. School.
Two main factors to why there may be a decrease of Mods online. Since your from Sydney that makes sence, since there aren't many Mods in your timezone then there is in other timezones.
Patience.
The only way to bypass the two factors ;)

I think you're right, the conversation drifted. That said, I do understand where you're coming from. There have been times when I've logged in and have been the only mod, and completely swamped with tickets with players complaining because they weren't getting immediate service.
That said, my reply was more to the point of there are things players can do to prevent them from needing a Mod's assistance. Protecting themselves from grief is a big one. That said, if they are griefed I'm more than happy to help them, but they still should take some of the responsibility for them being griefed in the first place. I was never griefed because I never built without first placing a PS stone, and I had no help, so I probably have a different perspective on grief than most. It is preventable. If you're reporting the same grief over and over again, well you can see how silly that is.
Back on topic though... Even I've looked at the list of Mod "time zones" and have gone, "Wow there's a big gap there". Not much you can do about that though if people in those empty time zones aren't trusted enough and putting forward the effort to become Mods.
Not to sound rude, but Mods also have lives. I, myself, wasn't able to get in-game the past two days because I was tied up with real life stuff. That's 2 days off since I started being a Mod. Considering I have a full-time job, a girlfriend, a late-night radio show, and the weather has been amazing outside... I dunno, I'd say that's pretty dedicated.
I'd simply ask players to have a little bit of patience. If there isn't a mod online, easily checkable with the /who command, then feel free to post your issue on the forum and I'm sure a mod would be more than happy to get to it when they can. I monitor this forum pretty heavily, and even when I can't get in-game (usually due to being at work) I try my best to help players from the forum.

If you want know, when i still on Classic Server, i really sufferred on Griefer Apocalypse in 8 Hours with Kascas. SO hurt. :(

water can be handled by trusted
Maybe, we can have a channel that only trusted people can hear for the water. Like /helpop

i Suggested the command of the water placement is /needwater that just Trusteds+ can hear.

I think there are 2-3 moderators in his time, and one of them, you are.
be patient guys, I will rescue you, all, when I become Mod..:P
Joking.
I dont face such problems because, even if I play the whole day on weekends, I always see someone.
-
I agree, people need to try to get PS to protect their creations. That's why I opened up a shop, so I can earn enought money to buy more PS. I have at least 60k now :-)
-
I agree that people should get ps but i have a 180 blocks tall tower and i need 17 coal ps to completely protect it. 17x1500=25500$.(I expected more lol) I don't want to spend this much money on ps. Plus, ps are not working when i place them for some odd reason. I did /ps on a couple of times but still no changes.

I think you're in My timezone aswell as Nyssa's (dedlymagik) and MissMedu you'll be right, when I finish school.

There's a problem judging just by time zones. Who's to say that someone in Australia is going to be on at 10PM their time (9:30AM mine) every day? What's to say they don't go on first thing in the morning? Or during the day? I know, from my own experience, that there are days when I hop online at 8AM, days when I hop on at Noon, and days when I don't get on till 10PM. I very rarely let a day pass when I'm not online, but I'm not always online at the same time.
Shift work, as suggested earlier, won't work either. You'll have mods that will have to book off due to IRL conflicts, they'll get pissed if players bother them outside their scheduled shift, it'll just be a mess.
I think our current mod numbers are very acceptable. Sure, there are times when players won't have access to a mod, but that will happen with 20 mods just as easily as it will happen with 100 mods.
Here's some simple solutions to problems when mods aren't around;
Spam - /ignore {playername} to block the spam and then report them on the forum in the "Support" area.
Grief - Wait till a mod is online or post a very detailed message on the forum which includes the exact X-Y-Z location.
Water - Politely ask a Trusted individual to assist you.
Portal - Players might be able to fire-charge portals now, but odds are you won't like where your portal takes you anyway.
Harassment - Report them on the forum in the "Support" category.

This should be pinned.

I still think we need more mod because i was on this morning and i needed a mod and there wernt any on so ya

Many of the staff members have finals in school this week and the following week. Once school is over for the summer, the moderators will be much more active.

Very true Logan, im currently in my Half yearlies for school and thats Australia.

I'm curious; what exactly did you need a mod for?

Agreed, but then again I'm a little biased... lol

I would just like to state this about the mod issue. Most of us have lives outside of minecraft. That being said the timezones have a big factor. GMT-4, GMT-5, GMT-6, GMT-7, GMT +2, GMT +1 GMT /0; these are the timezones that most of the mods+ are concentrated in. That is why you don't see any mods+ on when you are on. They are ether busy in real life or asleep.
-
ive constantly been monitoring the mod app to see if it opens to apply to attempt to solve this problem, as im on australian times

Once again, time zones really aren't the problem, and neither is a lack of mods. The problem is most mods (as well as most people on the server) currently have finals. Server numbers have been down lately too, not just mod numbers. They're all connected.
-
I agree with viper on that: Finals..
If as he said the player/mod number went down cuz of this, then, theres hardly a problem at all. I dont believe theres a mod problem since its been times i ve seen 4+ mods online but theres also a FEW times i havent seen anyone for a wile.
A quick tip:
Try checking whos available on mumble. Sometimes mods are there.

In addition, come and take a look at who's on the forum. There are many days I sit at work for 8 hours simply watching and monitoring the forum, but I can't get in-game because gaming isn't allowed at work (no surprise there). There's usually ALWAYS a mod around, they just might not be able to be in-game.

6 to 7 am CST (UTC-6) seems to be a time when Opticraft is lacking moderators...
